Create Physical Records of Your Students’ Blogs

Practical Ed Tech Tip of the Week – Create Physical Records of Your Students’ Blogs

One of the great things about having students blog for a semester or a full year is that they create a great record of their thoughts and experiences. At the end of the school year take some time to show students just how much they’ve written.  Saying, “you wrote 35 blog posts” doesn’t have the same impact as showing them 35 pages of written work. Blog Booker is a free tool that allows you to turn the contents of a blog into a PDF. Using BlogBooker is a fairly straight-forward process. BlogBooker walks you through every step of the process for creating PDFs out of Blogger, WordPress, and TypePad blog. The file format of the PDF might get a little askew depending upon the images in your posts, but at the least you will have a record of the words that your students wrote.

IXL Math and Language Arts

IXL (click the link for a intro video) is a website that allows drill practice for concept introduction or remediation after a poor assessment.  It explains concepts after incorrect answers and generates progressively harder questions as more correct answers are given by the students.  Students get a Success Score for the correct answers they give. IXL could be used as a bell ringer to review the previous day’s material, to introduce new concepts in a flipped setting, or as remediation after a poor quiz, assignment, or test.  I have also included Khan Academy links. The Youtube links are to the corresponding Khan Academy playlists for each subject.  Like with IXL, these videos could be used as review, as a lecture replacement, or for remediation.

How to Take A Screenshot on a Chromebook

How to Take A Screenshot on a Chromebook

Notice: This post is more than a year old. It may be outdated.
"Ok Google, Evernote" brings up an installed app, search suggestions, and Web Store suggestions.
There’s one question that I see new Chrome OS users ask with a fair bit of frequency:‘How do you take a screenshot on a Chromebook?’
It’s actually surprisingly easy once you know how (which is why I also included in my list of ‘10 Keyboard Shortcuts Every Chromebook User Should Know‘).
But for those yet to learn it, or those who’ve simply forgotten, here’s a quick refresher.

How to Take a Screenshot on a Chromebook

Let’s say you need to take a snap of your entire screen. To do this you press the ‘Ctrl’ and ‘Window Switcher’ keys at the same time:
take a screenshot on a chromebook
If you just want to capture a specific area of the screen just add shift to the key combo, like so:
take partial screenshot on chromebook
If you’re on the Dev Channel of Chrome OS you’ll also find a new “Take screenshot” option is available from the “More tools” drop-down in the Chrome Menu.
After hitting the shortcut the screen will briefly flash white and a notification to confirm its success (or failure) will follow.

Clicking on the notification will open the Chrome OS file manager. All screenshots are saved as high-quality .PNG files, and stored in the Downloads folder for easy retrieval.
